9ct 375 vintage gold Gretna Green Anvil charm, with the words and two wedding bells etched on the front.
In 1754 a law was passed in England requiring anyone under 21 to have parental consent to marry
but this law didn't apply in Scotland
hence forbidden romance and runaway marriages  headed to Scotland .
The first coaching inn over the boarder
 was Gretna Green,
Local craftsmen performed the weddings. The most respected craftsman was the  blacksmith and so the blacksmith forge at Gretna green became a favourite place to marry
The marriage ceremonies where sealed by striking the Anvil
